Orographic Flow Influence on Precipitation During an Atmospheric River Event at Davis, Antarctica

چکیده
Intense snowfall sublimation was observed during a precipitation event over Davis in the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica, from 08 to 10 January 2019. Radar observations and simulations Weather Research Forecasting model revealed that orographic gravity waves (OGWs), generated by north-easterly flow impinging on ice ridge upstream of Davis, were responsible for through foehn effect. Despite strong meridional moisture advection associated with an atmospheric river (AR) this event, almost no reached ground at Davis. We found direction synoptic respect orography determined intensity OGWs which turn directly influenced microphysics. hypothesize turbulence induced likely enhanced aggregation process, as identified thanks dual-polarization dual-frequency radar observations. This study suggests despite intense AR, distribution local processes tied orography. The mechanisms case could contribute extremely dry climate one main Antarctic oases.

Orographic Precipitation
■ Abstract The influence of surface orography on patterns of precipitation gives rise to some of the most pronounced climate gradients on Earth, and plays a fundamental role in the interaction between the atmosphere and the rest of the Earth System on a wide variety of time scales. The physical mechanisms involved comprise a rich set of interactions encompassing fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, ...
متن کاملPolarimetric radar observations during an orographic rain event
An intense orographic precipitation event on 5 January 2013 is analyzed using a polarimetric C-band radar situated north of the Alps. The radar is operated at the meteorological observatory Hohenpeißenberg (MHP, 1006 m a.s.l. – above sea level) of the German Meteorological Service (DWD). The event lasted about 1.5 days and in total 44 mm precipitation was measured at Hohenpeißenberg. Detailed h...
متن کاملCross-Barrier Flow during Orographic Precipitation Events: Results from MAP and IMPROVE
Ground-based and airborne Doppler radar data collected during passage of frontal rainstorms over the European Alps and Cascade Mountains of Oregon are found to exhibit characteristic cross-barrier flow and precipitation patterns. A stably stratified layer of blocked (or partially blocked) low-momentum flow below mountain-crest level is separated from strong cross-barrier flow aloft by a concent...
متن کاملEffects of orographic precipitation variations on the concavity of steady-state river profiles
The concavity, or curvature, of river profiles has long been taken to be a fundamental indicator of the underlying processes governing fluvial erosion, and thereby of landscape evolution. However, erosion laws have generally been derived without accounting for the strong orographically driven gradients in precipitation typically found in mountainous regions. In addition, field measurements have...
متن کاملHigh Resolution Simulations and Microphysical Validation of an Orographic Precipitation Event over the Wasatch Mountains during IPEX IOP3
This paper investigates the kinematic flow and precipitation evolution of a winter storm over and upstream of the Wasatch Mountains (IPEX IOP3) using a multiply nested version of the Pennsylvania State University-National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5). Validation using in-situ aircraft data, radiosondes, ground-based radar, and surface observations showed that the...
